 Adding Healthy Food Options

Healthy local food, and a healthy local food system are very important to all of us at Abundantly Green. We are working hard to make our farm a sustainable part of the local food system. As you know, this is not an easy task given the fluctuations in weather and the alternatives that all of us have from the conventional sources. Difficulties and competition present ongoing challenges that we have stepped up to meet successfully, for you, our CSA members, and for our farmers market customers.

You received the goat milk, cow milk, and fruit enthusiastically. The milk will be available each week. We lowered the temperature of one of our coolers to accommodate the requirements for milk. Order kefir grains from Hansville Creamery and make your own kefir. Vicky will tell you how to do it. You can use raw goat or cow milk. Prices for milk is below. The introductory price of cow's milk ends this week. It will be the regular price starting August 10.

The fruit will be available as long as Rob Story has it.

New This Week: Personal Roast Coffee

This week, we are adding locally roasted Personal Roast Coffee. A gift of the coffee from Personal Roast Coffee is in your CSA bag this week. It is organic, fair-trade, and artisan-roasted daily. The coffee is available to order through us for pickup with your CSA share. We cannot sell it separately at the farmers markets. Please call or e-mail us to order. Available in one pound bags, for $10 a pound. Order it on the signup sheet.

We have had a delightful day with Sarah McCarthey from Dungeness Valley Creamery and Vicky McGarrity of Hansville Creamery talking with our CSA members about milk, farming, and the joys of eating great food.

Vicky brought keifer grains so that we can make keifer. Like sourdough starter, keifer grains can be used over and over. Vicky sells them, and you can put in an order by sending us an e-mail.

We sold small amounts of All One Family Farm's peaches and apricots. Yum.

IT'S A NEW WEEK!

Last week had so many troubles – bee stings, dogs in accidents, and allergy attacks -- that we are trying to forget it. Unfortunately, we never updated our blog, either. That said, we are moving on to the nicest weeks of year, so far. Today is sunny and very warm.

In your bag

  • Kohlrabi
  • Potatoes
  • Snap Peas
  • Arugula
  • Salad Mix
  • Red Oak Leaf
  • Flashy Troutback
  • Green Romaine
  • Large shares have an additional item.

The shares are increasing in size as our garden recovers from our miserable spring.

Last week, we introduced potatoes. The All Reds are going gangbusters. They have a paper-thin red skin and a red flesh. They make great mashed or smashed potatoes that are a deep reddish pink.

This week we have kohlrabi, and brassica that is very versatile. The main feature is a 2 to 3 inch bulbed stem that is delicious however you choose to eat it, cooked or raw. The leaves, which look especially lovely, can be used in cooked greens and stir fry. I like to use the whole plant in stir fry, slicing the bulb into cubes and chopping the leaves. Kohlrabi takes on the flavor of your seasonings, so it is well-behaved in most dishes.

We are now a pick up for fruit, raw goats milk, and raw cows milk.

Order Fresh Fruit, Raw Goat Milk, and Raw Cow Milk to Pick Up At Our Farm

FRUIT: All One Family Farm will deliver your fruit order to us on Wednesdays, and you can pick it up at our farm.

It will be stored in our CSA coolers. Rob Story will deliver the fruit from Certified Organic Orchards in Central and Eastern Washington on Wednesday. He and his daughters pick up the freshly harvested fruit on Tuesday and delivers it himself, so this is not some faceless organization. Rob is a man who believes in fresh, wholesome, locally grown fruit. Take one of his brochures, to find out the dates that he is picking up from these farms and delivering. The fruit is only available seasonally. Contact Rob at (360) 732-4356, rob@allonefamilyfarm.com, or order online at http://www.allonefamilyfarm.com. COST: Prices vary-order by Fridays

GOAT MILK:  Little Rascals Farm will deliver Raw Goats Milk to our farm on Tuesday for you to pick up.

Vicky & John McGarrity farm in Hansville, just north of Poulsbo. They are a Washington State Grade A RAW Goat Milk Dairy, which is a very big deal now. Their goats milk is sweet and creamy. COST: $16 a gallon, $8 a half-gallon.  Contact Vicky at (360) 638-2909, or read more about goats milk and their farm at http://www.littlerascalsfarm.com/.

COW MILK: The Dungeness Valley Creamery will deliver Certified Raw Jersey (Cow) Milk  to our farm Farm on Tuesday. Run by Jeff and Debbie Brown and Ryan and Sarah McCarthey, their farm is located near Sequim. The milk from their registered purebred jerseys is rich and creamy. COST: $7.50 gallon; $4 half-gallon; $2 quart. For more information contact them at (360) 683-0716, willowsmb@yahoo.com, or read about them at http://www.dungenessvalleycreamery.com.

CALL US or send us an e-mail to start your pick up. A sample of the milk will be here next Tuesday, July 13.

YOU MUST SIGN UP AHEAD OF TIME TO HAVE MILK WAITING FOR YOU.

Our family farm since 1892.

Our business was founded in 1892 and changes with the generations and the needs of our community. We decided to go into farming produce in 2004, and became WSDA/USDA certified organic in 2005. We started our CSA in 2006 and the response continues to be overwhelming
