Recess is Over
In the CSA bag this week:
  • Head of bok choy
  • Head of lettuce
  • Radishes
  • Kale
  • Mustard flowers
  • And at least one other item.

As always, the size of your share determines the amount you will receive.

The week off gave the vegetables time to mature. If we get a few days of sunshine, more vegetables will ripen in the coming week.

When the weather turns warm for one day then the temperature drops ten degrees (more or less), this gives the wrong signals to some vegetables, causing them to bolt. Bolting is the process of the plant prematurely flowering so that it puts out its seeds. We have had some problem with this; however, depending upon the vegetable, bolting may change the size and shape but not its quality and flavor.

The vegetables for the following week are doing well. Our crew is planting and transplanting the vegetables for the weeks to come. We are adjusting to the new weather conditions by planting more cool weather varieties, and building hoop houses and such to create mini-environments. I will post pictures later.

RECESS

ADDING A PICK UP AT
SEASON’S END

Our promise to you is that you will receive a share of Abundantly Green vegetables each week for 20 weeks. We will live up to that promise. However, the vegetables need an extra week to get more size on them. For example, the kohlrabi bulb is the size of a golf ball where it should be the size of a tennis ball. Every day that the temperature is below 60ºF, the vegetables stop growing.

Standing in the garden, we had to make a decision whether to provide you with undersized vegetables or take a week off and allow the vegetables to grow to a more acceptable size.

In response to our new “summer” weather , we are actively learning how to cope with the what we are given by building more hoop houses and using more plastic mulch and row cover to warm the plants so that they grow.

This is our seventh season growing vegetables, and our fifth CSA season, and we have never had worse weather. The long-term weather forecast predicts warmer weather starting June 14th. We hope this will be the fact.

This is not simply the weather cycle, however. The Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland erupted two times in under a month in April, each reportedly were more massive than Mt. St. Helenes on May 18, 1980. The ash and dust from these eruptions has cooled the entire Northern Hemisphere, and disrupted wind and weather patterns.

Welcome to Your CSA

This was the first week of our 2010 Summer CSA. Each week you, as a member, will receive a share of vegetables. As we progress through the summer, you will experience a variety of vegetables. In our cool Pacific Northwest maritime climate, early in the season you will receive more luscious lettuces – such as Red Oakleaf, our own Salad Mix, and Red Rogue, plus bok choy, radishes, kale, and spring onions, however we do not promise all of these each week. The first week, everyone will be getting a pot of chives.

Each week, both the type and the varieties of vegetables change.

In a few weeks, you will receive broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, kohlrabi, cabbage, peas, green beans, cucumbers, summer squash, corn, and tomatoes,. There will be hearty root vegetables, such as rutabagas, turnips, parsnips, and potatoes. Herbs and savories such as chives, garlic, parsley, marjoram, thyme, dill, and basil will be in your share as they are ready. In late summer and fall, winter squash will be added.

We have planted more varieties I can list here. In addition to the seasonal vegetables, throughout the season you will find greens and other salad ingredients.

What does the cold spring mean for the shares?

The season goes as does anyone's kitchen garden, at first there is less, then there is more. Depending on how early the frost comes, the end of the season may be as abundant as mid-season. The first week will have mostly leafy greens, then the harder vegetables will ripen.

Here is our expectations of your portion of the share of the weekly harvest.

 Mini Share — 1 person

Small Share — enough for 1 to 3 people

Large Share — enough for 3 to 6 people
